Georgia Health Official Named CDC Director

Georgia Public Health Commissioner Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald is the new head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fitzgerald, a 70-year-old obstetrician-gynecologist, has led Georgia’s public health department since 2011. She’s also president-elect of the nonprofit group that represents the nation’s public health agencies, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the Washington Post reported.

Former CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden stepped down after serving for eight years. Veteran CDC official Dr. Anne Schuchat has been serving as acting director.

Another Republican Health Care Bill to Be Introduced

Another bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act will be introduced in about a week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday.

He made the announcement at a Rotary Club speech in southern Kentucky, but provided no details, the Associated Press reported.

McConnell was forced to cancel a vote on an earlier bill last week because too many Republican senators objected to the legislation for it to pass the Senate. He’s been spending the July 4th recess weighing changes that might win over dissidents in his own party, the wire service reported.

On Thursday, McConnell also said another approach would be needed if the Republicans continue to fail in their efforts to reach an agreement on a new health care law.

“If my side is unable to agree on an adequate replacement, then some kind of action with regard to the private health insurance market must occur,” McConnell, R-Ky., added in an admission that one of the top Republican legislative priorities might fail, the AP reported.

Clif Bars Recalled After Nut Allergy Concerns

The possible presence of undeclared nuts has led to the recall of certain types of Clif bars.

Clif Builder’s Bar Chocolate Mint Flavor, Clif Kid ZbarProtein Chocolate Mint, and Clif Kid Zbar Protein Chocolate Chip Flavors may contain peanuts and some tree nuts, including almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, walnuts and coconuts, according to Clif Bar & Company.

The products, which were sold online and and a retail stores across the U.S., could trigger serious or life-threatening allergic reactions in people with an allergy to peanuts and these specific tree nuts.
