Pop superstar Madonna, 64, is in the hospital due to a “serious” infection and has had to postpone her upcoming tour, according to an Instagram announcement posted Wednesday by her talent manager and producer Guy Oseary.
“On Saturday June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which lead to a several day stay in the ICU,” he wrote. “Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected.”
He added, “At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.”
Madonna’s “Celebration” tour, earmarking the 40th year since her career began, was set to launch next month.
A source told PEOPLE magazine that, “We will share more details with you soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows. She is out of the ICU now and recovering.”
The Material Girl’s last major health scare was in late 2020 when she underwent hip replacement surgery. That followed a hip injury that she sustained during her “Madame X” tour nearly a year before. The injury forced Madonna to cancel several shows scheduled for that tour.
At the time, Madonna said her fitness routine was key to maintaining health.
“How do I stay in shape? It’s all in your head… It’s called will, it’s called no one’s gonna stop me, and how I stay in shape is no one’s gonna stop me,” she told PEOPLE at the time. “And how I stay in shape is I don’t believe in limitations.”
