Menopause and Your Mood

Ladies….are you moody? Forgetting little things? According to a new study, we can no longer blame it on menopause.

6-hundred-43 healthy postmenopausal women ranging in age from 41 to 84 were evaluated in this study…

They were broken into two groups. The “younger” group included women who were less than six years post menopause. Those in the “older” group were 10 years or more beyond the transition. All were given a series of neuropsychological tests.

Despite a long standing belief that menopause can wreak havoc with mood and memory…this research found decreased estrogen played no real roll in loss of cognitive ability or mood.

The only hormonal link involved progesterone levels …which were positively associated with better memory and overall cognition in younger postmenopausal women.

The lead researcher says these findings don’t necessarily mean estrogens are irrelevant to cognition, but they do show that blood levels of the hormone may not have an effect on memory or brain function.
