For offices in need of a little pick-me-up new research suggests that standing meetings trump seated meetings when it comes to facilitating creativity, teamwork, and openness.
The finding is based on an office design analysis, which compared traditional meetings with ones that used standing desks. Study participants were first outfitted with small wrist sensors that kept track of hand moisture. Sweat gland activity is considered to be a sign of excitement and arousal. Some participants were sitting, some were standing. All were asked to spend a half hour discussing plans for a video production. Post-discussion, the standing team participants were found to have experienced greater arousal. They also displayed a greater openness to ideas a greater interest in brainstorming and a greater willingness to share information.
What’s more, in the end the video generated by the standing participants was graded as being of higher quality compared with the one produced by the seated participants. Need more incentive to stand up other than a boost to your energy or even your career? Other recent news tells us that cutting back on the time spent sitting can also boost your health!
