Freezing can help perishable foods last longer.
But how do you freeze food safely? The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers this advice:
- Set your freezer to 0 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. To make sure the setting is accurate, use an appliance thermometer.
- To make sure frozen food maintains its taste and quality, check product labels for “use-by” stamps.
- Most foods can be frozen, but not eggs in shells or canned food items. Some foods (such as lettuce, mayonnaise and cream) may be frozen safely but may not taste as good as when fresh. Most vegetables, seafood, poultry and meat are good choices for freezing.
- Pack foods in airtight containers. These can include plastic freezer bags, glass jars made for canning or freezing, and freezer paper coated in plastic.
- Put the date on all items before putting them in the freezer. Use the oldest items first.
